Sidi Gaber Railway Station

Built in 1854 as the first Alexandria terminus of the line to Cairo, about two miles east of the city, and replaced by a modern station in the 1970s.

A postcard record at Qatar National Library says that Alexandria’s main station was built at Sidi Gaber in 1854. The Victorian Web says the Alexandria to Cairo railway opened in 1856, that its original Alexandria terminus was at Sidi Gaber, about two miles to the east, opened in 1854, and that it was replaced by a modern station in the 1970s.

A photograph of 2010 shows the brick station building with its clock tower. Like the neighbourhood and the qism, the station carries the name of Sheikh Jaber al-Ansari, whose mosque stands nearby.
