Raml tram: suspended for redevelopment

The Raml tram fully stopped from Saturday 4 April 2026, after the full suspension was postponed 3 days (from 1 April) because of the weather, per Alexandria Passenger Transport Authority head Maj. Gen. Ahmed Shaaban. The project (Victoria – Raml Station, 13.2 km, 24 stations, 30 new trams) is run by the National Authority for Tunnels and takes 24 months. On 5 Oct 2026 the authority denied rumours of permanent removal; reopening is expected in 2028 (in May 2026 the authority's chairman gave 1 July 2028).

Complaints, operations and hotspots

Replacement vehicles run around the clock and the operations room sits 24 hours. Complaints (overcharging, cut routes) via WhatsApp only: 01281533385. The governorate listed 6 hotspots including Raml Station and Sidi Gaber, with extra emergency vehicles at peak times. Passenger Transport Authority buses: free for over-70s, 50% off for over-60s.

Sidi Gaber railway station

Alexandria’s second main railway station, in the Sidi Gaber shiakha. Trains on the Alexandria to Cairo and Upper Egypt line leave from here as well as from Misr Station, per timetables published in April 2026. It will be an interchange with the Abu Qir metro and the Raml tram, per the metro project manager (October 2026).

Newspapers publish daily timetables for Russian-built, Talgo, VIP and air-conditioned trains from Misr and Sidi Gaber stations. Times change; check with Egyptian National Railways (site, app or hotline 1661) before you travel.

Abu Qir train: closed while the line becomes a metro

The Ministry of Transport stopped the Abu Qir train in stages to build the Alexandria Metro: first between Misr Station and Sidi Gaber from 5 January 2024, then between Abu Qir and El Montazah from 1 February 2024, then the whole line from 1 March 2024. Its stops in the East District included Sidi Gaber, El Zahiriya and El Raml El Miri.

Alexandria Metro, phase 1: Abu Qir to Misr Station

The metro replaces the Abu Qir train. Phase 1 has 20 stations and 21 trains of 189 cars in all, according to an Alexandria Governorate report (El Watan, 4 October 2026). It is scheduled to open in March 2027, according to the National Authority for Tunnels (Youm7, 21 July 2026).

Planned metro stations in the East District

The published list of the 20 phase-1 stations includes El Zahiriya, Kafr Abdo, Sidi Gaber and Sporting, names of neighbourhoods in or on the edge of the East District. Trial running is planned for April and May 2027, per the Minister of Transport (Elwatan, October 2026). Exact station positions are not published.

Service-vehicle fares, March 2026

On 10 Mar 2026 Governor Eng. Ayman Attia approved new fares after a fuel price rise: an average 14%–17% increase for service microbuses, while public transport, collective transport and Raml-tram replacement fares were unchanged. Fares are posted at stands and drivers must display fare and route.

Official parking lots (July 2026)

In July 2026 the governor announced official parking lots and bays for a nominal fee in the Wasat, Gomrok, Sharq and Montaza districts. The published coverage names neither the lots in the East District nor the fees.
