On the evening of Tuesday 20 October 2026, building No. 34 on Saad Zaghloul Street, off El Teraa El Mardouma Street in the Abu Soliman area of East District, collapsed. It had a ground floor and four upper floors; the ground and first floors were empty.
Civil defence, the police and district officials went to the site, and Eng. Ayman Atia, Governor of Alexandria, and Maj. Gen. Hatem El Haddad, assistant interior minister and head of Alexandria security, followed the rescue. Two fire engines and 12 ambulances were sent, the building was cordoned off, and its gas and electricity were cut. On 21 October civil defence finished recovering the dead and injured from the rubble: the final toll was 5 dead and 2 injured.
The governor set up an engineering committee to inspect the site and the state of the surrounding buildings. The two neighbouring buildings, home to 8 families, were evacuated, and the families were given temporary housing through the constituency’s members of parliament. Teams from the social solidarity directorate and the Egyptian Red Crescent listed the affected families and their needs.
